Janis Rainis
Outstanding Latvian poet and playwright Rainis, real name – Jānis Pliekšāns (b. September 11, 1865 in Varslavāni of the Dunava rural municipality, d. September 12, 1929 in Majori; buried at the Raiņa Cemetery in Riga) – one of the most outstanding Latvian authors, a poet and playwright.


Philippe Halsman
Significant photographers of the 20th century Philippe Halsman was born in Riga on the 2nd of May 1906. He died in New York on the 25th of June 1979.


Kristine Opolais
Opera star Audience favourite and the darling of critics, opera star soprano Kristine Opolais was born in Latvia in 1979. She studied voice at the Latvian Academy of Music and with Margaret Honig in Amsterdam.

One of the all time favourite composers in Latvia Maestro Raimonds Pauls is not only the most famous composer in Latvia, but also the most popular Latvian composer in the world. Mikhail Baryshnikov
Dancer, choreographer, and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov was born on January 27, 1948 in Riga. He has attended Riga Choreography School, the class of Nina Leontyeva and Juris Kaprālis. These teachers helped Mikhail lay the the foundation for his superlative ballet technique.
