NATO film charts Latvian special forces selection

NATO has added to its growing credentials as a producer of short documentary films with a 13-minute movie about the selection of recruits to join Latvia's special forces. Now available on YouTube, the film titled "The Brave Man Wins" (sadly, no women are included) gives a look at the grueling selection process to join the coveted elite unit.

Latvian airline airBaltic is the first operator of Bombardier CS300 aircraft. The manufacturer has confirmed that the first CS300 aircraft dedicated to passenger travel with airBaltic is now moving down the production line. airBaltic’s leadership team, which included Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board, Martin Gauss, got a sneak-peak at the production facility.

On Monday, Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons received a Grammy award for the recording made by the Boston Symphonic orchestra under his leadership, according to information from the official website. Deutsche Grammophon’s released ‘Shostakovich: Under Stalin’s Shadow – Symphony No.10’ performed by the Boston Symphonic orchestra and Nelsons received a Grammy award in the Best Orchestral Performance category.

Holiday "Ligo!"

Ligo is a Latvian anniversary festival, which celebrates the summer solstice, the day when it has the shortest night and the longest day. Although the shortest night is usually on 21st or 22 June, the public holiday is on 23rd and 24 June. The day before Ligj is called Zāļu diena. On Ligo Eve people go to gather flowers, from which women make wreaths and put on their heads. Men's wreath is usually made of oak leaves. Līgo songs are associated with fertility and disaster prevention.
