Substantial rise in tourist numbers from Belarus in second half

As compared to the second quarter of the previous year, the number of tourists from Belarus countries has increased the most – by 53.4 percent, in the second half of this year, according to the Central Statistical Bureau.

The number of tourists from Russia rose by 37.2 percent, from Lithuania – by 23.9 percent, and from Estonia – by 14.8 percent. Also there was a significant increase observed in the number of visitors from Poland – by 42.8 percent.

Visitors from Belarus (average 3.6 nights), Norway (2.5 nights) and the United Kingdom (2.3 nights), stayed the longest period of time in Latvia.

According to the data of Central Statistical Bureau, the number of visitors in hotels and other accommodation establishments in the second quarter of this year comprised 471,200 people, which is 10.5 percent more than in the same period of the last year

In the second quarter of 2013 the total number of overnight stays comprised 971,100, which is 6.8 percent more than in the second quarter of 2012. Also in the first half of 2013, the number of overnight stays has increased, it was 0.8 percent more than in the same period of the previous year. Average length of stay of foreign visitors in the second quarter comprised 2.1 nights.

At the end of the second quarter 15,700 rooms and 36,400 beds were available in accommodation establishments.

Total room occupancy in Latvia in the second quarter varied between 40 percent and 55 percent. The highest room occupancy was in June both in Latvia in general – 55.4 percent, and in Riga – 68.3 percent. Analyzing hotel occupancy rate by stars granted, the highest room occupancy in the second quarter was in Riga’s four-star hotels with 79.9 percent in June.
