Increase in number of foreign travelers to Latvia last year

RIGA, April 4 - The number of foreign travelers and their expenditure in Latvia has slightly increased in 2012, according to the results of survey carried out by Central Statistical Bureau.

In 2012, foreign travelers crossed the border of Latvia 5.6 million times, which is 0.6 percent more than in 2011. Only a slight increase of the number of travelers was impacted by the decrease of passenger turnover at Riga International Airport and slight growth of the number of travelers in other modes of transport.

In 2012, foreign travelers spent LVL 383.6 million Latvia, which is 1.1 percent more than in 2011. The largest amounts in Latvia were spent by overnight travelers from Russia – LVL 63.2 million. On average travelers spent four days in Latvia.

''The consumption of incoming tourism in exports of goods and services is an important source of revenue for Latvia, and it gives significant contribution to gross domestic product of the country. Therefore, even though the increase of the number of travelers and their expenditure is small, it is seen as positive,'' said the head of the Central Statistical Bureau Aija Zigure.

72 percent of the foreign overnight travelers were accommodated in hotels or in other accommodation establishments, but 28 percent stayed at their relatives or friends. 36 percent of the travelers came to Latvia for the first time.

Analyzing the number of overnight travelers by countries, and comparing it with 2011, the number of travelers from Sweden increased by 27 percent, from Estonia - by 18 percent, from Lithuania - by six percent and from Germany - by five percent.

38 percent of foreign travelers mentioned recreation as the main purpose of their visit, 27 percent mentioned business, while 25 percent - visiting friends or relatives. As compared to 2011, the number of travelers who mentioned visiting to friends and relatives as the main purpose of their visit grew by six percent.
