Latvia has been named one of the ten best ethical destinations in 2013 by ethicaltraveler.org.
Latvia, having already made the list last year, shares it with Barbados, Cape Verde, Costa Rica, Ghana, Lithuania, Mauritius, Palau, Samoa and Uruguay.
Each of the countries scored highest in three main areas: social welfare (measured by indicators such as child mortality rates, economic freedom and crime rates); environmental protection (measured by an academic index and share of protected areas); and human rights (which includes press and political freedoms, as well as gay rights).
According to The World Bank’s Gini Index, Latvia received the best equality ranking of this year’s Ethical Destinations countries, with Lithuania following very closely behind. Latvia also was the highest ranked of this year’s countries according to The World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report for 2012, showing Latvia to be a leader in gender equality.
Ethicaltraveler.org is a San Francisco-based non-profit that has published an annual guide to the World’s Best Ethical Destinations since 2006.
