RIGA, Dec 7 - Out of 10 European Christmas markets, Riga offers the fifth best buy for British holidaymakers, according to the European Christmas Markets Barometer by the British retail post office company "Post Office Ltd".
At GBP 371 (LVL 320) for a two-night break for two, Tallinn was the cheapest - 45 percent less than Vienna or Copenhagen. The barometer included two evening meals with wine, coffee and beer, festive drinks and snacks, two nights' accommodation, return flights and transfers between the airport and city center.
According to "Post Office", like all 10 cities surveyed, Tallinn will be cheaper this year because the pound is worth 5.6 percent more against the euro than 12 months ago.
Budapest was the second cheapest option for two - GBP 469 (LVL 404), followed by Prague - GBP 476 (LVL 411) and Trento in Italy’s Tyrol - GBP 501 (LVL 432). Riga was fifth with GBP 515 (LVL 444).
"Post Office's" European Christmas Markets Barometer was compiled using prices sourced from national and regional tourist offices of participating countries. Flight and Eurostar prices were sourced online via "expedia.co.uk" and "eurostar.com" (November 9) based on the cheapest available fare from London for two adults, departing on the morning of December 14 and returning on the afternoon/ evening of December 16. Accommodation prices were sourced online via "booking.com" (November 9) based on two adults sharing a double/twin room at the lowest-priced three-star hotel in the city center between December 14-16, within one mile of the main Christmas market.
