Gulbis loses close match to Nadal

INDIAN WELLS (United States), March 14 - Latvia's top-ranked tennis player Ernests Gulbis on Wednesday lost a close match to Spaniard Rafael Nadal 6-4, 4-6, 5-7 in the fourth round of the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament in the United States.

This ended Gulbis' 13-match winning streak, the longest in his career, whereas Nadal will play Roger Federer in the next round on Thursday.

At the moment, Gulbis is ranked 67th in the ATP rankings, but is expected to move up at least 12 spots after earning 106 ranking points at the Indian Wells tournament.

As reported, Gulbis started the Indian Wells tournament from the qualification round, where he beat Christian Harrison (United States) 6-7 (5:7), 6-2, 6-4, and Olivier Rochus (Belgium) 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. In the first round of the tournament, Gulbis defeated Feliciano Lopez (Spain) 6-3, 6-2, in the second round he beat world 9th-ranked Yanko Tipsarevic (Serbia) 6-2, 6-0, while in the third round he defeated Italy's Andreas Seppi 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Gulbis won also his third ATP tournament singles title at Delray Beach, Florida, on March 3.
