This was a special game - coach Nolan

Ted Nolan.
RIGA, Feb 9 - After yesterday's hard fought victory over Kazakhstan, the head coach of the Latvian national men's ice hockey team Ted Nolan said that the packed arena made this game special.

''This was an exciting and selfless game. I am proud of the full arena - this was a special game,'' Nolan said after the victory. ''The game was determined by our two early goal, and excellent defense by Janis Sprukts to get the winning goal.''

''I am satisfied with the performance of all my players, as they all did what I set out for them to do,'' the coach added.

Speaking about the return to the national team by veterans Aleksandrs Nizivijs and Sandis Ozolins, the coach said that their presence and experience is invaluable. ''They are our team leaders,'' Nolan said during the post-game press conference.

As reported, team Latvia moved a step closer to the next Winter Olympics in thrilling fashion last night, escaping with a 3:2 victory over Kazakhstan as game officials rightfully disallowed a score in the final 30 seconds.

Juris Stals, Mikelis Redlihs and Lauris Darzins scored the goals for Latvia, while Roman Starchenko and Dimitri Upper scored the goals for Kazakhstan.
Latvia plays France Sunday in a final crucial battle in the qualification tournament. France beat Great Britain 4:2 earlier in the day.

If Latvia earns just a point from Sunday's game, it will earn qualification to the 2014 Winter Olympics.
