''VEF Riga'' lose close one to ''Valencia Basket'' in Eurocup

VALENCIA (Spain), Jan 9 - Last night, Latvian basketball club ''VEF Riga'' put up a good fight against favorites ''Valencia Basket'' in the opening match of the second group stage of this season's ULEB Eurocup tournament, but lost in the end 82:86.
Earl Rowland was the highest scorer for ''VEF Riga'' with 21 points, nine assists and five rebounds, followed by Donatas Zavackas with 18 points and Kristaps Janicenoks with 16 points.
On the other hand, Rafa Martinez was the highest scorer for ''Valencia Basket'' with 27 points.
The Latvian club took a 45:39 lead into a dismal third quarter in which they let the Spaniards back in the game and ultimately a win.
''VEF Riga'' will play its next Eurocup match on January 15 at home against Spanish basketball club ''Bilbao Basket''.
As reported, ''VEF Riga'' is in Group J in the tournament's second group stage together with Spanish basketball club ''Valencia'' and ''Bilbao Basket'', as well as Czech basketball club Nymburk CEZ.
The first and second place finishers of the four ''Top 16'' groups will qualify for the ULEB Eurocup's quarterfinals.
''VEF Riga'' finished in second place in its group in the tournament's first group stage, thus advancing to the ''Top 16''.
