Strombergs named Latvia's ''Athlete of the Year''

 RIGA, Dec 18 - In the annual ''Sporta Avize'' poll, which was organized for the 17th time, two-time Olympic champion in the BMX Maris Strombergs was named Latvia's ''Athlete of the Year''.
Strombergs set a new record, as all 50 experts and sports journalists that make up the poll voted for Strombergs. When he won the award in 2008, after winning his first gold medal, Strombergs received 46 (out of 50) first place votes.
Skeleton slider Martins Dukurs won the award in 2011 and 2010.
In second place in the ''Athlete of the Year'' voting was Latvian beach volleyball pair Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins, followed by M.Dukurs in third.
Long-jumper Ineta Radevica, hepathlete Laris Ikauniece, and skeleton slider Tomass Dukurs made up the top six in the voting.
