Timma and Porzingis score 27 points apiece to help Latvia get first win at EuroBasket 2017

Janis Timma and Kristaps Porzingis scored 27 points apiece as Latvia won its first match at this year's European Basketball Championship today by beating Belgium 92:64 (24:25, 23:8, 16:22, 29:9) in a Group D match.

At the start of the match, Latvia was trailing 2:8 and ended the first quarter with a one point deficit. In the second quarter however, Latvia only allowed eight points.
 

The Belgians drew closer in the third quarter, but in the fourth Latvia scored 23 points in a row to pull away and celebrate an impressive victory.
 

Besides scoring 27 points, Timma and Porzinis each also had two assists and two steals. In addition, Timma pulled down seven rebounds and Porzingis six.
 

In the meantime, Janis Strelnieks made 13 assists, setting a new record for Latvia at the European Championships. The previous record belonged to Raimonds Milginieks - 12 assists in one match at EuroBasket 2001.
 

Strelnieks also scored nine points, while Dairis Bertans had ten points, five rebounds and four assists.
 

Davis Bertans did not play today due to an injury.
 

Axel Hervelle was the highest scorer for Belgium with 12 points.
 

In Group D, Serbia and Russia have won one game each, Latvia and Belgium both have one win and one loss, while Turkey and Great Britain have each lost one game.
 

Latvia will play its next match at the tournament on Monday against Great Britain.
 

This is the 11th time Latvia is competing at EuroBasket. Two years ago, Latvia finished in overall 8th place.
 

All of team Latvia's games will be broadcast live on TV3.
 

EuroBasket 2017 will take place from August 31 to September 17 in four cities - Istanbul (Turkey), Helsinki (Finland), Tel Aviv (Israel) and Cluj Napoca (Romania).
 

The top four teams in each of the four groups will advance to the tournament's knock-out phase.
