Bookmakers: Latvia may become the biggest sensation of Eurobasket 2017

Latvia’s basketball players depart for Eurobasket 2017 without loud promises but with, probably, the best team. 11.lv sports betting site predicts Latvia’s team will reach the quarter-finals.

The site gives Latvia’s team a 52% probability of entering the quarter-finals. Entry to the semi-finals is given a modest 14% probability.

«Latvia’s top five consists of NBA superstar Kristaps Porzingins and three European League players. One more NBA player is in reserve. With a team like that, a place in the top 8 is pretty much guaranteed,» says 11.lv manager Toms Piliksers.

«Can we reach the semi-finals? Bookmakers are rather cautious about that at the moment. Still, if Porzingis joins the fray and other superstars in Latvia’s team take the lead – anything is possible,» bookmakers say.

11.lv predicts that Porzingis may earn 18 points on average in the tournament. Other productive players include Davis Bertans (12 points on average), Janis Timma (10.5) and Dairis Bertans (10.0).

One favourite in Latvia’s group is Serbia. 11.lv gives 57% probability for Serbia to earn first place in the group. The second favourite is Turkey, which has home ground advantage (24%). Latvia is third (9%).

«As for the quarter-finals and semi-finals, it is important to win first or second place to avoid facing Spain or Croatia in the first of elimination rounds,» explains to Piliksers.

He continues: «In any case, the situation is favourable for Latvia to surprise the basketball world – we have some of the best players assembled in a team. Other countries will not have some of the best players because of different reasons».

At the same time, bookmakers mention that Spain is a definite favourite of the tournament. The country triumphed in three out of four last tournaments. Other strong teams include Serbia, France and Lithuania.
