The World Championship for Winter Wind Sports took place in Tolyatti, Russia last week. Latvian kiteboarder Aija Ambrasa won third place in the winter kiteboard marathon discipline, BNN was informed by Latvia’s Kitesurfing Association.

186 athletes from 11 countries participated in the championship. Latvia was represented in all three disciplines of the championship by Ambrasa.

She told BNN: «This was one of the hardest competitions, mainly because of poor weather conditions. In the first days, we had air temperature of 0° C and wind speed of 10-20 m/sec. Wind speed later declined to 2-6 m/sec and air temperature increased to +3° C. This made the layer of snow unstable – there was snow, ice and water on the track. Results largely depended on the choice of equipment and experience».

45 medals were awarded over the course of six days of the championship.

Lars Abolins, chairman of LKA, told BNN: «Ambrasa’s accomplishment is highly valued. It proves that Latvian athletes have great potential in this type of sport. We thank Riga City Council for support and we hope other institutions decide to support us in the future so that Latvian kiteboarders can represent their country at the Olympics».
