High-ranking U.S. official to visit Latvia

 Ereli manages the State Department’s educational and cultural programs that serve to enhance mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other nations. As Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary, Ereli oversees a budget of approximately USD 635 million and a staff of more than 400 employees.
During his visit to Latvia, Ereli will have working meetings with various Latvian government officials, including Education and Science Minister Roberts Kilis. He will also meet with several representatives from non-governmental organizations focused on education, culture and civic engagement.
Ereli will participate in three virtual exchange programs, including a college-advising session with Middlebury College at the Riga Business School as part of International Education Week, a Virtual Meet America Program with "TV Chaula", and a virtual student exchange program, which will connect students at American University in Washington, DC with Latvian university students.
Ereli has worked extensively as a diplomat abroad and at senior levels in the Department of State in Washington, DC. He was Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain from 2007-2011. From 2006-2007, he served as Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary for Public Diplomacy. Ambassador Ereli was Deputy Spokesman of the State Department from 2003-2006 and Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy in Qatar from 2000-2003. His other overseas assignments have included Yemen, Ethiopia, Syria, and Egypt. Before joining the diplomatic service, Ambassador Ereli lived in Paris, France, where he worked as a journalist and the director of a human rights NGO.
