Pavluts ready to stay on as economy minister

Daniels Pavluts/LETA.
RIGA, Jan 16 - Current Economy Minister Daniels Pavluts (Reform Party) is ready to stay on and continue work in the new government, the minister's press secretary Daiga Grube confirmed to the business information portal ''Nozare.lv''.

She emphasized that Pavluts is prepared to continue work so to ensure the continuity of the reforms that have been initiated.

''This is in relation to energy policies, reforms within state and local government institutions, restricting the activities of quick-loan companies, as well as in the construction sector, where tighter supervision is necessary,'' Grube said.

As reported, even though both PM-designate Laimdota Straujuma and EM Daniels Pavluts called their meeting yesterday "constructive", there was no word on whether Pavluts would retain his Cabinet post.

Straujuma said she would wait for the Reform Party's official list of nominees for the Cabinet, and meantime consult with leading members of the economic sector.

Straujuma had revealed earlier that she is puzzled with Pavluts possibly staying in office because "the government [Dombrovskis] takes the responsibility for the Zolitude tragedy, instead of the ministry [headed by Pavluts] responsible for the construction sector."
