RIGA, Dec 20 (LETA) - The roof of the "Depo" hardware store on Zemnieku Street in Liepaja caved in yesterday evening due to excessive snow, in a total area of 800 square meters. Luckily, no one was injured, as the State Fire and Rescue Service told LETA this morning.
The accident occurred at about 7:50 p.m. or ten minutes before close. The rescue operation continued until 2:46 a.m. According to initial information, two salespersons might had been trapped under the debris, but luckily there was no one there.
Five fire trucks were at the scene as well as representatives from Liepaja City Council, including the council's executive director Edgars Rats, as the Fire and Rescue Service's press officer Inga Vetere told LETA.
The roof of the same store also collapsed in January 2011.
Liepaja City Council member Andrejs Rjabcevs believes this is due to the store owner's negligence in not shoveling the snow off the roof of the store. According to rescuers, snow accumulation on the roof of the "Depo" store was about one meter.
