RIGA, Dec 4 - Education and Science Minister Roberts Kilis will not return to work this week due to health problems, as the minister's advisor Inita Blacforda told LETA.
The minister's advisor Reinis Tukiss told LETA that Kilis was in Stradins Hospital for an examination of coronary and cerebral blood vessels, which would continue through Wednesday.
Nevertheless, the Education and Science Ministry's meetings with universities and colleges' representatives will take place on agreed due dates, they will be attended by the ministry's Higher Education Department representatives and Parliamentary Secretary Inga Vanaga (Reform Party), said Blacforda.
Kilis said last week that he would be back at work this week, when he is to meet with universities, colleges and academies' representatives to discuss state funding for higher education.
As reported, Kilis has commenced several reforms to the higher education system, including an evaluation of higher educational establishments' study programs which was supposed to become one of the criteria in distribution of state funding among universities and colleges.
The Education and Science Ministry's assessment of study programs has been widely criticized and several organizations, including the Latvian Rectors' Council and the Council of the Association of Latvian Students, and a number of higher education establishments have called for Kilis' resignation.
On the other hand, Kilis believes that the mounting criticism of the ministry for the controversial evaluation of universities' curricula should actually be addressed to the Higher Education Council and its head, Janis Vetra, because the council might have altered the findings of foreign experts who participated in the assessment. Vetra, however, says that Kilis' accusations are unfounded.
