Parties of the ruling coalition in Latvia have agreed to pick European Court of Justice Judge Egils Levits as a presidential candidate, as confirmed by Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš after the government meeting on Monday, 15 April.

He said parties of the coalition have reached an agreement on a single candidate. Kariņš also said he has no doubts Levits will be able to secure support from the majority of the Saeima.

KPV LV leader Artuss Kaimiņš affirms that his party will not pick its own presidential candidate; rather it will support the same candidate as the rest of the coalition.

Kaimiņš said he and multiple KPV LV faction members will support Levits.

The majority of the coalition – National Alliance ‘All for Latvia’– ‘For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK’, New Conservative Party and Attīstībai/Par! – had previously said they would support Egils Levits as the presidential candidate.

New Unity had said it would not pick its own presidential candidate. The party believes this would help the coalition agree on a single candidate. Still, the party did say for certain it would support Levits.

KPV LV Saeima faction’s decision on the topic of the presidential candidate will be announced during today’s coalition meeting.

Saeima’s opposition parties might propose their own presidential candidate, but they have yet to announce any names. Latvian Green Party (part of the Union of Greens and Farmers) could pick Raimonds Vējonis again.

President Raimonds Vējonis has yet to decide if he wants to remain for a repeated term.

Presidential elections in Latvia will be held in the second half of spring.
