Ināra Mūrniece has been elected as the speaker for the 13th Saeima. Thereby she will continue work she did in the 12th Saeima.

Two candidates were considered for this post: Ināra Mūrniece from the National Alliance and Dagmāra Beitnere-Le Galla from the New Conservative Party.

A total of 77 voting ballots were issued. 76 of them were declared valid.

Mūrniece was also the 12th Saeima speaker. In the 11th Saeima, on the other hand, Mūrniece was the chairperson of the parliament’s Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee. She also worked in the parliament’s Social Cohesion sub-committee.

Before becoming a deputy in the 11th Saeima, Mūrniece worked for 16 years as a journalist in Latvijas Avīze, writing materials about developments in domestic and foreign policy matters.

As it is known, the speaker represents the Saeima, chairs the parliament’s meetings and ensures order. During the absence of the speaker, their duties are performed by one of the speaker’s assistants. Saeima speaker also takes on the duties of the state president during the election of the next president.
