Latvia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry hopes authorities resolve the «taxi issue» at Riga International Airport soon, says the minister’s advisor Mārtiņš Drēģeris.

Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs has sent a letter to multiple state institutions, inviting them to resolve the «taxi issue» at the airport. Drēģeris explains that the ministry has received responses from Latvian Taxi Trade Union, Consumer Rights Protection Centre, Riga airport, economy and transport ministries regarding the quality of taxi services at the airport.

Foreign Affairs Ministry hopes a solution is found soon to make sure the quality of taxi services for Latvian residents and guests from other countries do not impact Latvia’s reputation.

«In the letter sent to multiple state institutions, I asked them to resolve the ‘taxi issue’ at Riga airport, which is a matter of state reputation, tourism development and investment attraction,» Rinkēvičs wrote on Twitter.

Riga airport representative Laura Karnīte says the airport’s ability to resolve this issue is limited by the decision made by the Administrative Court, which states that the airport as an institution is not allowed in any way to interfere with organization of taxi services on the public portion of the airport’s territory. Because of that, problems with taxi services at the airport will be resolved once the situation in this industry has been resolved.

According to amendments currently in the process of being coordinated by Transport Ministry, it is possible that there will be a maximum cap for the cost of a 10 km trip by taxi.

Transport Ministry explains that currently locations in which foreign guests use taxi services the most often, such as Riga International Airport, people are not properly informed of different price offers and other opportunities to use taxi services. Too often situations appear when passengers are asked to pay unreasonable prices for taxi trips. Such cases have been reported to Economy Ministry, Riga International Airport and Riga Planning Region.
