Historians: Soviet occupation authorities constantly interfered in religious life

During the Soviet occupation of Latvia, security workers and the Council of Religious Cult Affairs (CRCA) had constantly interfered in the selection of church officials, established the Latvian Commission for the Scientific Research of the State Security (KGB) of the Latvian Soviet Socialist Republic.

In its extensive study of KGB materials, the Commission has learnt that the methods of KGB and the RKLP had been interlinked in their work with religious organisations.

The methods of influence had been sending in informers, writing denunciations about religious leaders, publicly discrediting of religious figures and also turning religious organisations into instruments in the hands of political and security services.

During the years of Soviet occupation from 1944 to 1990, the authorities had manipulated with small Christian groups, combined and divided religious parishes to achieve political objectives.
