Minister: Latvia will insist on preserving of existing cohesion funding amount

Latvia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs has met in Paris with France’s European Affairs Minister Nathalie Loiseau. During this meeting the two ministers signed the Latvian-French Political Declaration Action plan 2018-2022. After discussing cooperation in EU matters, Rinkēvičs voiced Latvia’s interest in developing European projects in all fields together with France and other countries.

This declaration details specific actions for the development of cooperation between France and Latvia in fields like Europe’s future, Europe’s external relations, security and interior affairs, domestic market and competitiveness, energy, climate, transport, economics and finances.
 

The action plan also provides for the development of a political dialogue between Latvia and France and mutual cooperation in fields like defence and interior security, state administration’s development, economics, energy, agriculture, culture, education and science, as confirmed by Latvia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry.
 

Both sides said they are happy with excellent relations between Latvia and France, commitment to maintain an active political dialogue and desire to enhance cooperation in EU-related matters and mutual partnership in security, economy, culture and science.
 

The two sides also discussed matters associated with EU’s future, including matters regarding EU multi-year budget and digital market.
 

Rinkēvičs mentioned that Latvia intends to insist on preserving the cohesion funding amount at least at its current amount, as well as balancing direct payments to Latvian farmers. Rinkēvičs also voiced confidence that there should be an EU-level regulation to secure transparent financing and honest election campaigns in social media.
 

In relation to the action plan between Latvia and France Rinkēvičs said: «It is clear proof of mutual trust between the two countries, as well as desire to cooperate for the benefit of a wide range of common interests, as well as EU, NATO and other international formats.»
