Last year’s crime rate turned out the lowest in Latvia’s history, as reported by Prosecutor General Ēriks Kalnmeiers in his annual report.

A total of 44,252 crimes were registered in the country in 2017, which are 1,400 less when compared to 2016.

Certain types of crimes had increased last year; others had declined. Among republic cities, crime rates remained the lowest in Valmiera, where only 488 crimes were registered last year.

The number of crimes committed in Latvia declined by 9.6% last year, which, according to Kalnmeiers, is a significant decline. The number of smaller crimes declined 1%, whereas the number of criminal violations declined 12%.

Last year, the number of especially serious crimes in Latvia had increased slightly in Latvia. While in 2016 the number of such crimes was 1,740, the number of such crimes committed in 2017 was 1,752. Kalnmeiers emphasizes that this is not as much a trend as it is a change. The number of especially serious crimes in the country declined 9.6% last year.

In total, the number of crimes committed per 100,000 residents was 2,180, which is 47 less than in 2016.
