Latvia believes funding for cohesion policy and common agriculture policy should be kept on its current level, said Latvian Foreign Affairs Ministry’s parliamentary secretary Zanda Kalniņa-Lukaševica in Strasbourg.

On Monday 5 February, Kalniņa-Lukaševica met with European Parliament’s Budget Committee’s Chairman Jean Arthuis, as well as MEP Isabelle Thomas, who is in charge of preparing the repot for the next period of EU multi-year budget. Kalniņa-Lukaševica informed officials of Latvia’s interests and priorities for the EU multi-year budget after 2020.

During her conversation with Isabelle Thomas, Kalniņa-Lukaševica mentioned: «Latvia believes funding for the cohesion policy and agriculture policy should be kept unchanged. It is also necessary to find funding for priorities such as defence and security of Europe’s external borders, as well as programmes for cultivating competitiveness in science development, youth support, transport and energy projects.»

During her meeting with Jean Arthuis, Kalniņa-Lukaševica emphasized: «To ensure an appropriate budget for Europe’s priorities and needs, its total volume should not be reduced.»

In addition, the two agreed that it is important to form an approach for revenue and expenditures in such a way that would be simple and easily administrated. Kalniņa-Lukaševica also presented both European officials with Latvia’s position on the multi-year budget development principles, the importance of cohesion policy and the need to equalize agriculture policy payments.
