The government may soon decide on introduction of new quality criteria for Latvian schools, said Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis told Rīta panorama programme of LTV.

The prime minister allowed that requirements of the Cabinet of Ministers regarding raising quality criteria for school education and evaluation of teachers’ work may cause serious discussions.

He said that no rapid closure of schools is expected right now. This depends on municipalities. Work should be put into improving quality indexes to make it clear which school are eligible for exceptions based on the number of students.

The prime minister also said that work will be performed on the schedule for the increase of teachers’ pay. It is currently planned that half of the necessary funding for wage increases will be acquired through the reformation of the school network reform. The other half will be acquired through other means. Kučinskis admits that without a school reform, wage rise will be minimal.
