In response to Environment Protection and Regional Development Minister Kaspars Gerhards’ request, Latvian State Audit Chief Elita Krūmiņa detailed in a response letter to the ministry that an audit will be launched in the first half of 2018 on the grants provided by Riga municipality to different associations and foundations, as confirmed by the ministry.

The ministry had previously turned to the State Audit with suspicions and concerns regarding misuse of finances of Riga City Council and possible violations by means of allocating funding for NGOs. State Audit was asked to perform an audit in Riga City Council. It its reply, the State Audit confirmed adding the audit to the 2018 plan and thanked the ministry for continued successful cooperation.

«Activities in Riga City Council cause suspicions and concerns about the use of funding from the municipal budget. Use of budget funds for established goals should be clear and unambiguous. This is why I have decided to turn to the State Audit with a request to perform an audit in Riga City Council in regards to allocation of funding for associations and foundations. I am satisfied with State Audit’s decision to perform an audit,» comments Gerhards.
