Solvita Āboltiņa to put down her Saeima mandate next year

Saeima member Solvita Āboltiņa plans to put down her mandate following the beginning of the next parliament session next year.

Āboltiņa says this week’s Saeima meeting will be the last one she attends. The spring session will begin 8 January, and she has no plans to participate in any more Saeima meetings.

Before she puts down her mandate, however, she does have one more meeting of the Saeima National Security Committee to chair.

Āboltiņa started in Kurzeme in elections. With her leaving the parliament, Āboltiņa’s place in the Saeima could be taken by Normunds Tropiņš. He said, however, that he has no plans to work in the Saeima. Instead he intends to continue working in Talsu County municipality. Other potential candidates include Artis Gustovskis and Edgars Ikstens.

Āboltiņa had previously mentioned her plans to put down her mandate before the end of the 12th Saeima to focus on diplomatic service.

Āboltiņa is currently the head of Unity’s Saeima faction. On 21 December it is planned to elect a new leader.

On 6 November, Unity’s board decided to exclude Āboltiņa from the party for her comments and behaviour when Unity discussed the possibility of replacing the country’s current economy minister.

Āboltiņa was put in charge of Unity in 2011. Last year Andris Piebalgs was elected as the party’s chairman. When Unity was a union of political parties, Āboltiņa served as co-chairperson. From 2008 until 2010, she was serving as New Era party’s board chairperson.
