Families with children in Latvia to be provided with additional allowances next year

Starting with March 2018, families with two or more children in Latvia will be provided with additional state allowances. This is provided by amendments to Cabinet of Ministers Requirements approved by the government this week.

From March onward allowances for families with two children will be EUR 10 a month. Families with three children the allowance will be EUR 66 a month. For every following child, the allowance will increase by EUR 50.

At the same time, in accordance with changes to the Law on State Social Allowances, from 1 January 2018 state benefits will be paid until the child turns 20 (19 in the past) or while the child studies in general education or vocational education institution, or if the person marries. From 1 January onward the benefit will also be paid for the child that undergoes education in a state or municipally funded place as part of a vocational education programme and is paid a scholarship.

On 22 November 2017, the government approved amendments to the Law on State Social Allowances. Changes provide that allowances for two or more children aged one to twenty are to be paid in accordance with terms and amounts detailed in requirements of the Cabinet of Ministers.
