Pabriks: democracy cannot exist if the majority stays silent

«76 years ago this day marked one of the biggest tragedies in Latvia’s history, when Jewish residents in Latvia were mass-executed in Rumbula. In commemoration of victims, we must make sure something like that never happens again,» says member of European Parliament Artis Pabriks.

He emphasizes that Latvia was occupied at the time and had no way to prevent that tragedy from happening. «Violence against others based purely on their ethnic background is something Latvian residents had experienced at the time. That period really showed people’s true colours. There were those who condemned such acts and those who participated, hoping to become heroes. The majority stayed silent.»

What happened back then shows that staying silent can lead to tragedy. This is why it is important to understand that democracy cannot exist if the majority stays silent, Pabriks says.
