Man convicted for murder and recently released from prison involved in police shoot-out

 RIGA, Nov 21 (LETA) - Earlier this month, an incident took place in Riga's Purvciems suburb, where a man previously convicted for murder and recently released from prison fired on police officers.
As LETA was informed by the State Police, the incident happened on November 9 in Purvciems suburb, when ''Alfa'' special police unit officers were on patrol in the area. The officers noticed a suspicious person who started to flee when police attempted to stop to check his identity.
In the chase that followed, one of the officers almost succeeded in detaining the man, who suddenly took out a pistol and fired on the officers. The officers were able to dodge the bullets and were not injured.
The shooter was detained and his identity confirmed. He is a 45-year-old man, previously convicted of murder and recently released from prison.
A pistol and ammunition was also confiscated from the man.
A criminal process has been started, and the man in question has been taken into custody as a security measure.
In the interest of the investigation, no more information will be released at this moment.
