Jean Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, has promised to pay more attention to Baltic States next year, when they will be celebrating their centenary.

«I will personally turn attention towards Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Romania in 2018 because it is the year when those countries will be celebrating their one hundredth birthday,» said Juncker in his annual speech on the state of the European Union on Wednesday, 13 September.

«Those who wish to change our future and our continent have to know our history, our shared history,» he said. «This includes those four countries, without which Europe would not be whole.»

On 16 February 2018, Lithuania will celebrate 100 years since the signing of Lithuania’s Declaration of Independence. 24 February will mark 100 since the declaration of independence in Estonia. 18 November will mark Latvia’s centenary.

Romania, which counts the beginning of its modern state from 1859 and which regained its independence in 1877, will celebrate 100 years since its merge with Transylvania on 1 December 2018.

Poland will also celebrate its centenary on 11 November next year, but Juncker did not mention this in his speech.
