The Human Rights Committee of Latvia doubt chances of Russian-speaking pupils to pass exams well

The Human Rights Committee of Latvia (HRCL) doubts chances of native Russian-speakers to learn the state language of Latvia and to pass exams well.

The HRCL stated that having analysed the draft Cabinet of Ministers’ regulation, which sets forth waiving the right to choose the language, in which to answer in school examinations and based on a UN report on minority group right issues, the planned amendments would place representatives of minority groups in an unfavoured position.

In addition, the organisation believes, they would be disproportionally denied from the chance to enrol at a higher education institution.

The HRCL plans to submit its research to the Latvian government and international human rights bodies.
