RIGA, Nov 21 - During a meeting with representatives from the Cooperation Council of Agriculture Organizations yesterday, President Andris Berzins expressed support for farmers' demands for equalization of European Union direct payments.
Equalization of the EU direct payments to farmers and keeping the Cohesion policy funding unchanged for the Baltic countries are among the Baltic countries' priorities, said Berzins, adding he hoped that the Baltic countries would continue to insist that the direct payments need to be raised to the level where they would offer fair competition opportunities on the EU single market.
The mounting controversy between the EU member states during the talks on the EU multiannual budget was also noted during the meeting.
Berzins informed farmers' representatives about the results of his recent meetings with EU officials, as well as discussions with the Estonian and Lithuanian presidents regarding the EU Cohesion policy and direct payments to farmers.
Berzins also expressed support for the Baltic farmers' initiative to draw attention to the EU's unequal direct payments to Baltic farmers by sending a Soviet-era tractor to Brussels.
The meeting was held at the initiative of the Cooperation Council of Agriculture Organizations, it was also attended by Agriculture Minister Laimdota Straujuma.
