"Saulkrasti Jazz 2013" festival kicks off today

RIGA, July 15 - Today, the 16th international festival "Saulkrasti Jazz 2013" will begin in the Latvian town of Saulkrasti.

The festival will run until July 20, offering two concerts every day. The first concert will be performed at the town's Sun Square (Saules laukums) free of charge at 3 p.m., whereas the second one will take place at the hotel "Minhauzena Unda" at 7 p.m., LETA was informed by the festival's director Raimonds Kalnins.

"Saulkrasti Jazz 2013" will also traditionally feature workshops. This year, 120 young musicians, the most optimal number of participants, will be able to take part in the festival's master classes taught by the world's best musicians. Most participants will be from Latvia, however, there will also be guests from Russia, Ukraine, Lithuania and Belarus.

Percussion master classes will be taught by Donald Edwards (the U.S.), bass - Ed Howard (the U.S.), piano - David Berkman (the U.S.), guitar - Joan Soler (Spain), wind instruments - Kestutis Vaiginis (Lithuania), vocals - Cecile Verny (France).

4,000 people attended the festival last year. "Saulkrasti Jazz 2013" organizers hope for a similar number this year.
