Acclaimed Russian documentary festival relocates to Riga

Vitaly Mansky.
A critically-acclaimed Russian documentary film festival will be reborn this year in Latvia after the Kremlin's crackdown on free speech made its future at home untenable, film industry publication The Hollywood Reporter said Tuesday, citing report by LSM's Latvian-language service.

Russian director Vitaly Mansky - who relocated to Riga himself after falling foul of the Russian culture ministry has announced that the ArtDoc Fest he founded will take place in Riga October 15-26.

"We will show films that are all-but impossible to screen in Russia," Mansky told LSM.

Mansky is only one of a growing number of Russian cultural and intellectual figures to seek freedom of expression in Latvia while retaining the ability to address a wide Russian-speaking audience.
