Ceramics from Rīga take over Daugavpils Rothko Centre

Publicity photo of the exhibition.
From July 17 to September 15, the Mark Rothko Art Center in Daugavpils hosts the Ķīpsalas keramika (Ceramics of Ķīpsala) exhibition, which features works by six female artists who have worked in the Ķīpsala ceramics workshops - a kind of an academy for ceramists thoughout Latvia - for much of their artistic lives, LSM reports.

In the 70s and 80s of the previous century, the ceramists from Ķīpsala made the name of Latvia known in Europe – they received prizes and awards in international exhibitions, participated in symposiums and other international events.

The exhibition features ceramic art from the so called 'Golden age artists' Inese Āboliņa, Skaidrīte Cihovska, Violeta Jātniece, Izabella Krolle, Kornēlija Ozoliņa, and Silvija Šmidkena.

The Mark Rothko Art Center in Daugavpils, the birthplace of abstract expressionism’s leading artist Mark Rothko, is located located inside of the fortress' Arsenal building, and features a permanent exhibition with original works of the painter.
