Ainars Rubikis wins Russia's "Golden Mask" as best conductor

The annual "Golden Mask" Awards were handed out to the lucky winners Friday evening in Moscow, and among them was Ainars Rubikis as the Best Conductor of an Operetta or Musical for Leonard Bernstein's "Mass" at the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theater.

Rezija Kalnina was nominated as Best Director of an Operetta or Musical for "Mass", but the jury chose not to present this award to anyone.

Alan Mencken's "The Little Mermaid" took home the "Mask" as the season's Best Operetta or Musical.

For Best Director of a Play, the winner was Lithuania's Rimas Tuminas for his "Yevgeniy Onegin" at Moscow's Vahtangov Theater.
