National Theater productions well received in Moscow and Budapest

RIGA, April 9 - The National Theater (NT) reports that guest performances of Daniil Kharms' "The Old Woman", directed by Vladislav Nastavshev, and Georg Buchner's "Woyzeck", directed by Kiril Serebrennikov, were well received at Moscow's Gogol Center and at the Budapest theater festival "MITEM" ("Madach International Theatre Meeting").

In Moscow, at a NT press conference, the subject of Ukraine and Crimea was not ignored by Serebrennikov, Managing Director Ojars Rubenis and actor Gundars Grasbergs, with Latvian Ambassador to Russia Astra Kurme also present. They pointed to the wisdom and the lessons contained in "Woyzeck", and stated in addition that the theme selected for the guest performances comes from the great Latvian poet and playwright Janis Rainis: "No people shall go to war against other people, but all for one against the dark forces."

The company reports no negative reaction from their stance, neither from audiences nor reviewers.

As for "MITEM", "The Old Woman" was lauded as one of the most interesting productions from the foreign companies assembled.

To note, the Moscow guest performances were "up in the air" following the developments in Ukraine and Crimea, but an emergency meeting of the entire company March 19 voted not to cancel.
