Opera diva Opolais makes history over weekend

Latvian soprano Kristine Opolais.
Latvian soprano Kristine Opolais scored an unprecedented "double debut" this past weekend at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Having just sung the lead role in "Madama Butterfly" Friday night, Opolais (34) received an early morning phone call from Met chief Peter Gelb, and to her astonishment, was asked to sing Mimi in Saturday's matinee of "La Boheme", subbing for an ailing Anita Harting. She took on the challenge, and emerged victorious, as proven by the five-minute long standing ovation from the audience of 4,000.

And not only 4,000 at the Met. The performance was carried live in select movie theaters in North America, Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, with the total audience estimated at 200,000 plus.

Opolais made her Met debut in "La Rondine" in 2013.
