Martins Ozolins to become Latvian National Opera's chief conductor

RIGA, Nov 19 - The new chairman of the Latvian National Opera (LNO) Zigmars Liepins has chosen Martins Ozolins as the opera's chief conductor.

At the moment, Lithuanian conductor Modestas Pitrenas is the chief conductor of the LNO.

Ozolins is expected to be confirmed on November 25.

Liepins points out that Ozolins is prepared to become the chief conductor of the LNO, but that an agreement must first be made with the current chief conductor.

Ozolins is currently a conductor at the LNO, as well as a lecturer/professor at the symphony conductor department at the Jazeps Vitols Music Academy.

Ozolins is a winner of the prestigious ''Jormas Panulas'' international competition of conductors, and has won several other international competitions.

In his career, Ozolins has also worked with the Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra and the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra. Since 2010, he is also the artistic director of the professional symphonic band ''Riga''.

Ozolins has also been a guest conductor in Moscow, Mexico, Tampere, Trieste and Sicily.
