Conductor Poga picks LNSO

Andris Poga/LETA.
RIGA, Oct 30 - The Latvian National Opera company had high hopes for the gifted Andris Poga as its new chief conductor, but, as LETA was informed today, Poga will be at the helm of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO) as of November 1.

Poga, who signed a three-year contract, had this to say: "I am honored that LNSO has given me the opportunity, and I realize what a tremendous responsibility it is. Right now, there are many plans and ideas that I would like to materialize in tandem with management and the musicians. Therefore, I hope that this moment, when I sign, is the start of successful cooperation."

Poga, who was given approval by the musicians in a vote (76%), will conduct his first concerts December 28, 29 and 30.

LNSO has been without a chief conductor/artistic director since the departure of Karel Mark Chichon, who had complained of a "lack of support."
