Booming alcohol stores on Latvian-Estonian border to expand

Facing large interest from Estonian customers, alcohol stores located at the Latvian side of the defunct Ainaži-Ikla border crossing rush to expand their premises.

Estonian public broadcaster ERR reports citing the daily Postimees, the sales floor of the Ainaži SuperAlko store, which belongs to Aldar Eesti, will, according to project manager Riin Rätsep, increase from the current 800 square metres to 2,000 square meters until March 2018 at the latest.

«We had periods here in the summer when the big store looked like a kiosk, with people with shopping carts lining up outside and the parking lot full of people,» Rätsep noted, explaining that the extension will hopefully help avoid such situations for some time.

Also on the Ikla-Ainaži border, the expanded Alko1000 store is to open at the end of 2017 and the firm’s manager Einar Visnapuu revealed that their sales area will expand from 700 to 1,300 square metres.
