VAT to be reduced for fruits and vegetables characteristic for Latvia

Parties of the ruling coalition agreed to support Agriculture Ministry’s proposal to reduce VAT from 25% to 5% for fruits, vegetables and berries characteristic for Latvia.

This decision was later confirmed by Prime Minister Maris Kucinskis after the meeting of the ruling coalition.

This matter will be later viewed by the government and the Saeima.

Agriculture Ministry’s prepared report ‘On differentiation of VAT for food’ mentions that it is the only way for the industry to achieve a positive effect and prevent businessmen from working in the grey area. It will also assist with the competitiveness of producers of fruits, vegetables and berries.

Finance Ministry and Economy Ministry mentioned in their reports on Agriculture Ministry’s proposal that they would not support it.
