31 Latvian athletes to compete in Rio Olympics

The Latvian Olympic Committee on July 14 confirmed members of the Latvian Olympic team for the Rio summer Olympics taking place from July 5 to August 21 in Brazil.

31 athletes have been listed in the national team to compete in the following sports: BMX and road cycling, wrestling, judo, canoe, tennis, beach volleyball, weightlifting, swimming, sailing and various athletics’ disciplines.

«Even though the number of athletes in the team is smaller than in the teams for London and Beijing Olympics, the average quality of this team is higher,» evaluated head of the Latvian Olympic Committee Aldons Vrubļevskis.

«At least ten team members are ready to compete for the highest results and they have proved this with their performance in both the current and previous sporting seasons».

In previous summer Olympics held in London in 2012, BMX cyclist Māris Štrombergs won his second Olympic gold medal, while beach volleyball duo Māriņš Pļaviņš and Jānis Šmēdiņš won silver medals.
