Latvians the most satisfied with wages in Baltic States

Compared with other Baltic States, Latvia has the largest number of employed people who believe they receive adequate pay for their work. 39% of employed people in Latvia believe they are paid adequate wages, as well as 34% in Estonia and 19% in Lithuania.

Compared with a similar study carried out in 2013, the proportion of people satisfied with their pay has increased by 13% in Latvia 14% in Estonia and has reduced by 2% in Lithuania, according to results of an internet study carried out by CV-Online.

Although a positive trend is noticed with people’s overall satisfaction with their pay, there is still a large proportion of employed people whose wage is inadequate for the work they do. More than 60% of employed people in Latvia believe their work is not valued enough (65% in Estonia and more than 80% in Lithuania). In each Baltic State, less than 1% of employed people believe their work is valued too much and their pay is higher than it should be.

People employed in education and science, social care, public catering, security and storage, as well as service and trade industries are the least satisfied with their pay in Latvia.

People employed in IT, electronic/telecommunications and banking sector admit having appropriate pay for their work.

«We can conclude that overall satisfaction with pay has improved in the country over the past three years. This can be explained with the decline of labour force and the desire of employers to preserve existing employees, which is especially topical in the competition among different companies for the best employees. There has not been a noticeable change with overall satisfaction in recent years, as the employees satisfied the most with their pay remain in industries with high demand for professionals, such as IT. People satisfied the least with their pay are traditionally found in sectors such as education, healthcare, security and public catering,» – said CV-Online Latvia manager Aivis Brodins.

61% high-rank managers find their pay adequate (42% among low-rank managers and 38% among assistants).

Employed people aged 26-35 generally view their pay as adequate. Nearly every second interviewed person of that age said that. Dissatisfaction with pay increases with age of employed people. Every fourth respondent aged 56 to 65 says their pay is adequate.
