Latvian authorities intercept a shipment nearly 759,000 contraband cigarettes

On 25 July, an inspection of a truck travelling from the Russian Federation, SRS officials of Terehovo border checkpoint discovered a stash of multiple boxes beneath the truck. A closer inspection uncovered that those boxes contained cigarettes. Customs officials confiscated 60,000 LM brand cigarettes with excise tax labels of the Russian Federation. In relation to this case, SRS Customs Police launched a criminal process in accordance with Part Three of section 190 of the Criminal Law. Confiscated goods have been handed over to the State Provisions Agency, as reported by SRS. On 21 July, an inspection of a railway wagon carrying coal uncovered a stash of 20 packages wrapped in a black polyethylene film. A look inside those packages revealed 100,000 PREMJER and NZ Gold brand cigarettes with excise tax labels of the Republic of Belarus. An administrative violation report was compiled. Materials of this case were later handed to SRS Customs Police to decide on whether or not to launch a criminal process. On the same day, while inspecting a cargo truck headed from the Russian Federation, customs officials found the roof of the truck suspiciously thick. Upon dismantling the construction, officials discovered a stash containing 409,960 NZ Gold brand cigarettes with excise tax labels of the Republic of Belarus. A criminal process was launched in accordance with Part three of Section 190 of the Criminal Law. One person was arrested – the 1980-born citizen of Belarus who was driving the truck. On 16 July, cardboard boxes containing 135,000 Premjer cigarettes were found under mass of coal carried by two railway wagons at Indra checkpoint. SRS Customs Police launched criminal processes in relation to all attempts to smuggle goods to Latvia. BNN
