Gingrich: NATO member states ‘ought to worry’ about US commitment

Newt Gingrich.
Former US House of Representatives Speaker Newt Gingrich announced after Donald Trump’s recent statements about the possibility of USA refusing to defend NATO member states that members of the alliance ought to worry about US commitment.

«[NATO] countries ought to worry about our commitment,» – Gingrich told CBS. «They ought to worry about commitment under any circumstances. Every president has been saying that the NATO countries do not pay their fair share,» – he added.

The republican politician added that countries of that kind are a source of weakness, not strength.

Answering the question if Trump and USA would go to the rescue if Russia decides to attack a country like Estonia, Gingrich said he ‘would think about it a great deal’.

«Estonia is in the suburbs of St. Petersburg. The Russians aren’t gonna necessarily come across the border militarily. The Russians are gonna do what they did in Ukraine,» – said the former speaker. «I’m not sure I would risk a nuclear war over some place which is the suburbs of St. Petersburg. I think we have to think about what does this stuff mean,» – he added.
