In the next NATO summit in 2018, delegates should work on making the defence of the Baltic region stronger in air and at sea, evaluated Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkēvičs.

«It is significant to continue the implementation of Wales and Warsaw summit decisions, by developing collective defence abilities with sea and air components in the Baltic states’ region. It is also important to us that Georgia and Ukraine remain on NATO’s agenda, therefore we support their representation at the summit by as senior officials as possible,» stated Rinkēvičs.

The Latvian Foreign Minister took part on Monday, October 10, in a meeting of the foreign ministers of Central and Eastern Europe in Warsaw, where diplomats discussed the recent Russian-Belarusian military training Zapad and its implications.

According to the Latvian Foreign Ministry, Zapad showed an increase in the military abilities of Russia and concentration of forces near the borders of the Baltic states and Poland.
