Latvia’s Saeima supported the legislative draft regarding the provision of Latvian citizenship to world-famous artist Mikhail Baryshnikov for his contribution to Latvia’s culture, as BNN was informed by Saeima’s press-service.

The decision to provide Baryshnikov with Latvian citizenship was made unanimously. Deputies of all Saeima factions signed the legislative draft.

One of our era’s greatest dancers, Baryshnikov was born in Riga 1948. After he started his dancing career with Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, Baryshnikov fled to USA in 1974. There he continued his professional career.

Baryshnikov has always been an active member of society and an active voice in political affairs. He actively defends democratic values and human rights, as mentioned by Saeima speaker’s associate Inese Libina-Egnere, who was the one who submitted the proposal to provide Baryshnikov with Latvian citizenship.

In his letter to the Saeima, Baryshnikov expressed his gratitude for the initiative regarding his citizenship. He says he feels truly humbled to receive such high praise from the Republic of Latvia and if he is provided with citizenship, he promises to honour it with pride.

A person can be provided with Latvian citizenship for special accomplishments in Latvia’s interest. Before the Saeima makes its decision, the initiative is reviewed by the parliament’s Citizenship, Migration and Social Cohesion Committee.
