Changes made to management boards of Riga and Ventspils freeports

On Tuesday, 8 March, Latvia’s Cabinet of Ministers approved changes to management boards of Riga and Ventspils freeports.

From now on, Transport Ministry will be represented in Riga Freeport by Artis Stucka. The ministry’s state secretary Kaspars Ozolins will represent the ministry at Ventspils Freeport, as reported by the ministry.

At the same time, the government has made the decision to allow both officials to combine posts.

Economy Ministry’s representative in the management board of Ventspils Freeport will be Gatis Edlitis. He has more than ten years of experience working in international institutions and managing matters related to financial supervision, international trade and European security policy.

Considering his experience in regional development and municipalities, appropriate level of education and motivation to sort out long-standing problems, head of Valmiera City Council Janis Baiks has been approved for work in Riga Freeport’s management board, as reported by Economy Ministry.

As it is known, Baiks will be able to retain this and other posts, including his place as the holder of shares owned by Valmiera city in VTU Valmiera and Vidzeme hospital.

«Latvia’s ports work in conditions of steep competition. In order to bring considerable benefits to the national economy and welfare of every resident in Latvia, ports should function under conditions of good management principles. This is why I have decided to appoint people with good reputation, appropriate education and experience as the ministry’s representatives in ports,» – said Economy Minister Arvils Aseradens.

He has also informed representatives of the ministry’s priorities and goals: «Latvia’s ports cannot afford to lose their competitiveness. They have to continue working with specific goals in order to make sure the volume of services does not decrease. The transport industry concluded 2015 with a downward curve, which is something we cannot afford in a long-term perspective if we want to maintain Latvia’s economic growth as one of the fastest in the European Union.»
